Order is by a Bayesian-adjusted rating: each shop's Google rating is pulled toward the directory average in proportion to how few reviews back it, so a 5.0 from six reviews does not outrank a 4.9 from eight hundred. The stars shown are the raw Google rating and review count.

Field notes

What locals say about Des Moines tattoo shops

Pulled from Google reviews of the top-rated shops in Des Moines.

“Finished part of my tattoo with Sean and the guy deserves a raise. We talked about video games and joked about stuff the entire time and it's always a blast. I highly recommend coming here for tattoos, it's the only place I go and I always go to Sean. I've never gotten a bad tattoo from him. His eye for detail is insanely good.”
Aaron Klaassen on Iron Heart Tattoo
“I went into Lucky Gal 10 minutes before they closed on a random Monday because I needed help with one of my piercings and didn’t know what else to do. Although the piercer had already left for the night, the rest of the staff worked together to help me fix my problem and went above and beyond to help me when they definitely didn’t need to. Thank you so much!!”
